What does safeguarding adults mean?
  • Safeguarding Adults means protecting an adult's right to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect.
  • Safeguarding duties under the Care Act 2014 apply to an adult aged 18 years or over who:
  • Has needs for care and support (whether or not the local authority is meeting any of those needs)
  • Is experiencing, or at risk of, abuse or neglect
  • As a result of those care and support needs is unable to protect themselves from either the risk of, or the experience of abuse or neglect
Abuse takes many forms and can include everything from physical and sexual abuse to discrimination and neglect.
Safeguarding is about people and organisations working together to prevent or stop abuse and neglect.

Any agency providing care, professional or any member of the public can raise a safeguarding concern.
